| It is said that the history of Gifu lanterns
goes back to the seventeenth century. Back then, the people
in the highest society such as royalty, nobility, samurai,
and priests used lanterns. They used lanterns for religious
ceremonies and as lighting equipments in their houses. In
the eighteenth century (during Edo period), paper lanterns
became popular among ordinary people because of mass production
of candles. In the nineteenth century, the demand for lanterns
grew bigger and bigger. People used lanterns to exercise their
faith or to express their taste of art. After 300 years of
its history, Gifu lanterns became graceful handcraft. Each
part of Gifu lanterns is made by highly skilled craftsmen
who can make Mino Washi, trimmed bamboo, and artistic drawings.
Mr. Isamu Noguchi introduced the beauty of Gifu lanterns to
all over the world through his art works. |
